How to Fix Error 1316

The 1316 error is caused when you try and install Microsoft Office 2000 SR1 on your PC. This error shows because of a conflict between the original installation of Microsoft Office, and the new installation of the SR1 package. The net result, is that your system will be unable to install the package you want, leading your computer to show the 1316 error. Fortunately, this error is extremely easy to fix, by using the steps outlined in this tutorial.

The 1316 error normally shows like this:

Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file F:data1.msi

The reason why this error shows is down to your computer not being able to identify the data1.msi file that it needs to install. This can be caused by the CD being damaged or the file path of data1.msi being incorrect.

The first step to fixing this error is to edit the “registry” to allow the installation of SR1. The registry is a large database inside the Windows system which stores vital settings for your computer to run. This database allows your computer to recall many of the settings it needs to run, but also has a series of settings inside which prevent it from being able to find the data1.msi file that it needs to for the installation. You need to edit the various registry files that prevent the SR1 package from being installed.

After you’ve done this, you should then use a ‘registry cleaner’ program to scan through the rest of the registry of your PC and repair any of the other damaged settings that could be causing a problem. The ‘registry database’ is literally where Windows stores all the files and settings that it requires to run, and is where everything from your desktop icons to your most recent emails are kept. Although there are some specific registry keys which often prevent SR1 from loading properly, there are also a range of other errors which can make your PC unable to run as well. To fix these, registry cleaner tools are designed to scan through your computer and repair any damaged registry settings that often cause errors such as error 1316. Using one of these tools, along with the specific registry editing should solve this error & allow you to install Office SR1.
